Flextime is permitting employees to avoid peak commuting hours by work hour adjustments. Instead of the typical 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. routine and commuting during the most congested periods, perhaps employees work 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This decreases commuting times and helps lower employee stress associated with congestion.
Many companies offer compressed work schedules to employees as an alternate work option. An employees work schedule may include a four-day, 40-hour week (10 hours per day). Or, a two-week work schedule might include working 9 hours per day for eight days and one eight hour work day. This essentially provides for one day off from work every other week. In either case, compressed work schedules can reduce workers' weekly commutes by 20% or more.
If this alternate work option has yet to be introduced into your company, why not initiate the possibility? Offer this as an option to your employees. Approach your supervisor and inquire about the prospect of teleworking. Your fellow commuters will thank you.
