Historic Cemeteries Print E-mail

The Project Area has two cemeteries in near proximity. Neither of the cemeteries will be directly impacted by the Project. One on the south side of Church Street, the St. Mary's Cemetery is affiliated with the St. Mary's Catholic Church, the oldest Catholic Church in Virginia. While the Project is adjacent to the cemetery on the Beltway's north side, there is no need to encroach on the cemetery property. The existing retaining wall along this edge is the boundary of all Beltway work and it is even slightly to the south of the wall, in some areas. Historically interesting, information from a publication by the St. Mary's Church and Archdiocese of Arlington is summarized.

The Freedmen's Cemetery on the north side of S. Washington Street is rich in history. Its story and position in Virginia history resulted in a landmark posting in fall of 2000 identifying its location, near the corner of Church Street and S. Washington Street. Enhancements to the cemetery have been planned as part of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project.
