A "Focus" on community issues has been summarized into three areas:
Alexandria, VA
- The US Route 1 / Franklin Street intersection will be undergoing reconstruction once all utility work in the vicinity has been completed. Beginning June 16, 2005, the westbound movement across US Route 1 and the left turn to northbound US Route 1 have been reinstituted. Until the intersection is completed in September 2005, the right turns are prohibited due to safety concerns.
- On the east side of Franklin Street additional electrical work was required to be completed in May 2005. That work is completed and the roadway will be paved soon.
- Electrical work in Jefferson Street is continuing with good progress being made. This work began in mid-May 2005 and should be completed in the summer. Parking restrictions are required along the south side of Jefferson Street. Signage for daytime parking restrictions are placed each week.
- A new Haul Route for vehicles leaving Jones Point Park as a result of City of Alexandria placing restrictions on Gibbon Street. This new route requires drivers on Royal Street to turn left onto Jefferson Street, turn right onto Columbus Streetand turn left to GibbonStreet to US Route 1.
Due to the construction by the City, this detour will be in place for through late 2006.
- Steel Delivery Notification
The construction vehicle haul route for the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project was approved by the City and has been signed and in use since 2001. Construction vehicles will continue on the routes shown below.

Delivery of large steel girders for the new Outer Loop Bridge on the Virginia approach will begin in January 2005. A test run will proceed the production delivery. The girders, ranging from 59 to 115 feet long and 12 feet tall, will be transported on flat bed trucks from Manassas , VA. There are VA state police imposed time restrictions on I-95/I-495 for oversized vehicles. To reduce traffic conflicts, the deliveries will be made at night. Alexandria police will assist within the City. Advance and follow vehicles will escort the girders on the interstate and on the designated haul route in the City to Jones Point Park . These vehicles will reduce the noisy braking and stop/restart frequency thereby reducing the vehicle noise. Vehicles will not exit before 7AM.
