<div id="p7ssm_description" style="display: block;"><strong>Maryland Approach Spans</strong><br /> View looking north (from the dredged channel just south of Rosalie Island, Maryland) at the construction of the Maryland Approach Contract (largest single MSHA Contract ever awarded ($191 M)). The steel segments being erected are part of the future outer loop Beltway (scheduled to open in mid-2006). The v-pier sections being erected are part of the future outer loop Beltway (scheduled to open in mid-2006). The segments are cast near the Maryland shoreline and barged out and placed according to specifications. There are two sets of three v-pier supports being built (one for each bridge) at the bascule as compared two sets of two v-piers for the rest of the bridge. <hr /> Notice the cranes which extend into the air (over 280 feet), the Project needed Federal Aviation Administration approval because of the location of the contractor's cranes in relation to the flight path in Regan National Airport (five miles to the north). <hr /> <em>Photo Credit: Trevor Wrayton, VDOT</em></div>

There are two sets of thress v-pier supports being built (one for each bridge) at the bascule as compared two sets of two v-piers for the rest of the bridge. The orange boom in the middle is the concrete placement system that brings concrete from Jones Point Park, Alexandria and is pumped out on site and placed where the contractor needs it. The v-pier system in the back is completed and the contractor is placing steel beams for the drawspan. The steel rebar that is being lifted is a portion of the v-pier system that will be placed in the formwork. The green steel is epoxy coated to protect against the environment. <div id="p7ssm_description" style="display: block;"><strong>Virginia Approach Spans</strong><br /> View looking west at the construction of the v-pier system which is part of the Virginia Approach Spans in Jones Point Park, Alexandria VA. The red crane to the left is placing a steel beam across the v-pier. The steel beams are manufactured in Manassas, Virginia and trucked in at night onto the site. The length of the tractor trailer (over 100 feet) preclude driving on the Interstate during the day, so the shipments have to occur in the middle of the night under escort; another challenge is navigating the narrow streets of Alexandria, VA. <div id="p7ssm_description" style="display: block;"><strong>Virginia Approach Spans</strong><br /> View looking at the installation of green steel rebar placed as part of the Virginia Approach Spans in Jones Point Park. Under the rebar are 40 24" pre-stressed concrete piles approximately 58' in length. This area is located near the middle of the land portion of the new inner loop bridge (near the former footprint of the Army Reserve Center). The Project is currently building the outer loop bridge which is scheduled to open in mid-2006 with the inner loop bridge opening in mid-2008. <hr /> <em>Photo Credit: PCC</em></div>

This work begins at the Virginia Abutment and continues over the Jones Point Park to the draw span portion. The exposed concrete is the fascia. The concrete is brought in via truck and pumped up onto the bridge structure. The existing bridge is to the left of the picture. <div id="p7ssm_description" style="display: block;"><strong>Bascule Span</strong><br /> Heavy Lift - August 12 2005<br /> Stats:<br /> Two draw span leave: approximately 466 tons - equivalent to some 200 cars and nearly 3 times as heavy as any previous lift.<br /> Length: Approximately 155 feet<br /> Height: Approximately 15 feet<br /> Width: Approximately 55 feet<br /> <br /> The leaves are lifted and secured by four hydraulic jacks with cables, once the leaves are in place, they are secured by 3,236 bolts (809 bolts per corner). Will takes three days to complete but by the end of the first day, there will be enough bolts in place to secure the structure. This is the first time, the Maryland and Virginia sides of the new bridge will be physically united. There will be three identical lifts that will match the lift that occured today (August 12, 2005). <hr /> <em>Photo Credit: PCC</em></div>

<div id="p7ssm_description" style="display: block;"><strong>MD 210 Interchange</strong><br /> View looking south (near the Oxon Hill Road and the MD 210 Interchange) of the recently installed steel beams. Deck pans will then be placed, after that epoxy coated steel rebar will be installed prior to concrete being poured (deck). This bridge structure when complete will carry MD 210 northbound traffic to northbound I-95/I-495. <div id="p7ssm_description" style="display: block;"><strong>U.S. Route 1 Interchange</strong><br /> View newly paved roadway which will ultimately comprise of the outer loop (local and express lanes). This paved area will be used beginning in July/August 2005 on an interim basis for two way traffic until the Beltway inner loop roadway is completed. The red bridge buildings (on the left) are part of the Hunting Point Apartment complex. Alexandria VA.
