Bridge Projects

Bascule Spans
View looking east from the operators tower. The controls are for the locking/unlocking and opening the eight spans; also included in the controls are backup mechanisms. There is a 15-foot separation between the two bridges. The bridge to the left (under construction) will open to traffic in mid-2008 and fully open by the end of 2008. The operators tower should be fully operational by end of 2007. The new bridges are 25 feet higher than the old Wilson Bridge, which will reduce the openings to 60-65 times a year. The old bridge opened 250 times a year.
