The design of the bridge and a portion of the roadway on either side of the bridge do not preclude future conversion to either heavy or light rail. Working with WMATA for many years, provisions have been made for the structural capacity for either system. In addition, both the US Route 1 interchange in Virginia and the I-295 interchange in Maryland have the capabilities to accept transit from the bridge and transition it to the landside, at optional locations. Should the conversion to transit take place on the bridge, HOV would be removed. If the adjacent Beltway roadways include HOV, a logical transition would be required for the HOV system.
