I-95 South/Beltway Inner Loop Reduced to One Lane

OVERNIGHT AND INTO MORNING of July 23-24
“Stay Away” to Avoid MAJOR Back-ups Caused by Emergency Repairs

Motorists are urged to stay away from the Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway I-95/495 South as emergency deck repairs to an overpass will narrow the highway to a single lane (of three) just west of Telegraph Road from 9:00 p.m. Friday, July 23 until no later than 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 24.  The right two lanes of the Inner Loop (I-95/495 South) will be closed as well as Telegraph Road ramps to and from the Inner Loop.  The emergency repair work is weather dependent.  

The emergency repairs are similar to pothole work completed on the Cameron Run overpass in May.  Earlier this week, an area of potholes opened up between the right and center lanes. The damaged area is far less extensive than the portions of the overpass that were repaired in May, and therefore repairs are expected to be completed no later than 10:00 a.m.  VDOT and the Wilson Bridge Project regret any inconvenience to summer vacationers and others travelers during these emergency repairs.

Major traffic back-ups are expected, particularly Saturday morning as traffic volumes increase. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and take alternate routes. Southbound I-95 travelers can use the north-west arc of the Capital Beltway, crossing the American Legion Bridge, which is nearly the same distance as I-95 across the Wilson Bridge.

Beltway traffic will be narrowed to one lane just after the exit for Pershing Avenue/ Telegraph Road North; all three lanes will be restored prior to the Eisenhower Connector.

The weekend ramp closures and detours are as follows:

•  Telegraph Road South on-ramp to the Inner Loop (I-95/495 South).

o       Detour:  From southbound Telegraph Road, take Mill Road to right on Eisenhower Avenue to left on the Eisenhower Avenue Connector to the on-ramp to the Inner Loop.

• Telegraph Road North on-ramp to the Inner Loop (I-95/495 South).

o       Detour:  From northbound Telegraph Road, take Pershing Avenue to right on Stovall Street to right on Eisenhower Avenue to left on the Eisenhower Avenue Connector to the on-ramp to the Inner Loop.
