Weather permitting, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project will be conducting significant Capital Beltway closures on November 21.  Also, there will be changes to Telegraph Road traffic patterns beginning November 29.  Variable message signs will be posted to alert drivers and provide detour information when necessary.  This work will have major impacts on Beltway and local traffic, and motorists are strongly advised to seek alternate routes to avoid delays. The scheduled work is as follows.

CAPITAL BELTWAY CLOSURES

Monday, Nov. 21 OVERNIGHT from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning:

  • The two right lanes of the Capital Beltway Outer Loop (I-95/495 North) will be closed between the Eisenhower Avenue Connector and Telegraph Road to hang an overhead sign.  All lanes will be closed for 15 minutes just after midnight, and traffic will be fully stopped for this short window.

  • The right lane of the Capital Beltway Outer Loop (I-95/495 North) will be closed from the Eisenhower Avenue Connector to Telegraph Road for roadside improvements.

Tuesday, Nov. 22 DAYTIME from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.:

TELEGRAPH ROAD AREA CHANGES

Tuesday, Nov. 29 – Traffic shift for southbound traffic on Telegraph Road

  • Beginning at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, November 29, the left lane of southbound Telegraph Road will be closed and one lane will remain open until traffic is shifted onto the newly completed section of the bridge over Cameron Run.  The left southbound lane will reopen in the afternoon, but motorists should note the new traffic pattern in this area.  The work will involve connecting the bridge to the current southbound lanes of Telegraph Road with asphalt pavement placed during the day. The intent is to start early and reduce the impact to southbound traffic by late afternoon. Ramps will remain open during this operation to minimize traffic impacts. Motorists should be advised of delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes.

Wednesday, Nov. 30 to Friday, Dec. 2 – Closure of Outer Loop ramp to Huntington Avenue

  • Beginning at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, November 30, the ramp from the Outer Loop LOCAL lanes to Huntington Avenue will be closed until no later than Friday morning, December 2. The portion of the ramps to N. King’s Highway and Telegraph Road South will remain open during this time. Motorists traveling on the Outer Loop LOCAL lanes wishing to go to Huntington Avenue will be advised via variable message signs to proceed to U.S. Route 1 to Huntington Avenue. This closure is necessary to widen the ramp to Huntington to the planned dimensions, which was not possible during the various phases of construction of the interchange.

Additionally, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project has been notified that WMATA will be conducting night-time work in our area on Monday, Nov. 21.  WMATA will be closing access to the Outer Loop THRU lanes just after 11 p.m. right before the THRU/LOCAL split.  They advise that all motorists will need to use the LOCAL lanes on the Outer Loop Monday night.

Please use caution when traveling in this area. All construction-related work and dates are subject to change, depending on weather, material and contractor availability or other unforeseen conditions.
