- Balances natural, recreational and cultural resources and opportunities
- Integrates the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge as an integral element of the
park's design
- Protects and conserves as much of the existing natural habitat as possible
- Improves its habitat qualities - such as woodlands, wetlands, tidal
marsh areas and shoreline, and woodland groves
- Provides recreational amenities of both a passive and an active kind:
- Pathways and trails, including the Mount Vernon Trail
- Playground and tot-lot
- Fishing access from the shoreline, with a cleaning stations
- Canoe/kayak launch ramp
- Protect cultural and historical resources in accordance with the recommended
Treatment Plan that is an element of the Memorandum of Agreement, 1997
such as:
- Lighthouse and District Cornerstone Marker
- Shipways
- Finishing pier
- Other sites and events associated with the property's pre-historic,
colonial, 19th and 20th century history
- Interpret the natural and historic resources of the park through
a comprehensive signage and exhibit system
- Provide for the continued use of the park by local residents through:
- Enhancement of existing, and provision of new, informal relaxation,
picnicking, and strolling areas
- Continued presence of community gardens
Ultimately, the City of Alexandria and NPS will make
the final decision on enhancements to Jones Point Park, both during and
after construction of the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge.
Improvement plans for the park have prompted extensive
discussion among the Project's Stakeholder Participation Panel of park neighbors
and other park-interested parties, as well as City of Alexandria and NPS
representatives.

The concept for the ultimate design of Jones Point Park
is a "works in progress" and is subject to review and revision.
