Latest sign posted for Washington Street Deck
There are several components of the contract for the reconstruction of Washington Street that are underway. Once the east side roadway, curb and gutter, ultimate Mt. Vernon trail were completed, work was shifted to the west side. A median is under construction between S. Alfred Street and South Street. The access from the temporary entrance at Hunting Point Apartments will be restricted to right turn only, while the median is under construction.
Deck
The deck will be built in quadrants. The southeast quadrant has been completed until landscaping can be placed, later in the contract. The relocated Mt. Vernon trail is due to be opened in December 2006 from S. Washington Street to Jones Point Park, parallel to the Beltway and the new access roadway. The trail will go downgrade to join Jones Point Park, as the beltway rises to meet the bridge at the abutment.
Lighting
The lighting in the parking lots at both the Hunting Point Terrace and Towers apartments is brighter than it was prior to the construction. Residents seem to like the brighter parking lots. There are actually fewer posts, although the lamps themselves emit higher-powered foot-candles. The ornamental lighting along S. Washington Street in the contract area has been in the process of installation over the last several weeks.
Trail
The new Mt. Vernon trail will open in December 2006. At that time, the temporary trail around the perimeter of the Hunting Point on the Potomac towers property will be abandoned. The new trail will connect to Jones Point Park, ultimately to cross the bridge on the north side and to US Route 1.
The trail on the west side of Washington Street will parallel a ramp from US Route 1. This two-way shared pedestrian/bicycle path will end at northbound US Route 1 in the vicinity of the Hampton Inn. The foundations and supports for the sound wall have been placed and the sound wall panels will be placed in December 2006.
Noise walls
The noise walls are similar in texture to the sample of “Old Town Brick” in the hunting terrace community. Both sides of the sound wall that wraps around the terrace community will be that brick.
The sound walls east of Washington Street will have a “fuzzy raked” finish, similar in color and texture to the sample on the Church Street ramp. The roadside will have a fluted finish similar to those walls near the Eisenhower Connector on the Beltway.
Work Schedule
The contractor continues to work on Saturdays, as needed.
