Kid's Corner!

Neighborhood News
Washington Street Deck

Washington Street is a continuation of the George Washington Memorial Parkway through Old Town Alexandria. Currently, the roadway is operating with two lanes in each direction. South of the Beltway, access to the Hunting Point on the Potomac Terrace Apartments is provided by a slip ramp directly into the community. A new circulation roadway around the Terrace apartments is in place. To Access the Hunting Point on the Potomac Tower Apartments, bear right onto the access roadway and turn left on S. Alfred Street (at the STOP sign). Turn left at the traffic signal heading north on S. Washington Street. Proceed up the hill and pass the bus lay by. Turn right into the Hunting Point Tower Apartments.

This access road will be used for entering and exiting the community and will be shared by all vehicles including construction vehicles. Please use caution.

To exit from the Hunting Towers, the same access road will be used. Until the intersection at S. Washington is complete, however, left turns will not be allowed. To go south, drivers will have to turn right or go north to go south. A suggested route from northbound Washington Street, turn right onto Green Street, left onto left onto St. Asaph Street, left onto Jefferson Street and left onto southbound Washington Street. While this may be inconvenient, it will be a safer access than turning at the access road. The geometry of the intersection does not allow enough sight distance to the left and right for the drivers to be able to see the approaching vehicles. Without a signal it is unsafe to turn left form the access road to southbound Washington Street. An enforceable “No Left Turn” sign will be posted.

Access to Porto Vecchio from southbound S. Washington Street requires that drivers bear right onto the access road and proceed to the traffic light at S. Alfred Street. At the traffic light, proceed directly across S. Washington Street into the community. To exit from Porto Vecchio, drivers may turn left or right at the signalized intersection.

There is a variety of construction on-going on Washington Street and in its vicinity. The Project Scrapbook has progress photos of this work:

    Urban Deck

The urban deck is being built in quadrants. The southeast and southwest quadrants of the deck construction are complete. In fall 2005, work will begin on the northwest quadrant of the deck after traffic is shifted on the Beltway to cross under the completed deck. Landscaping will be placed once the northeast quadrant is completed, likely near the completion of the contract in 2007.

    Utilities

Utility relocation work has been completed for the construction underway. Utility relocation will resume when work on the new Inner Loop of the Beltway and urban deck work begins.

    Lighting

The new Washington Street will have a grassed median and overhead lighting that will be part of a Plan developed by the City of Alexandria. The new lighting is due to be turned on by the end of June 2005. it replicates the lighting north in Old Town Alexandria.

The new roadway typical section will include walkways and landscaping.
